Japanese GMO Internet Corporation pays staff in Bitcoin

Japanese Internet service provider GMO Internet Group (GMO) said on December 14 it would start paying part of its staff salaries in Bitcoin, according to CoinDesk.

Specifically, from February 2018, this plan will start to apply for employees of its subsidiary GMO Internet Co., Ltd and expand to 4,000 employees of GMO Group.

GMO employees receive a salary equal to [cryptocurrency_widget type = “inline” symbol = “BTC ~ USD” template = “basic2 ″ color =” default “], ranging from 10,000 yen (about 88 USD) to 100,000 yen (881 USD). They may also receive a bonus of 10% of the selected amount as a “incentive,” the company said.

“GMO will contribute to the development of the virtual currency world by increasing the activities related to virtual currencies at the group,” the statement of GMO Internet Group said.

In October, GMO announced a plan to raise capital by issuing virtual currency (ICO), and said the company’s new virtual currency will be used in the payment system of the new product series.

According to the company’s latest release, the new system will use virtual currency issued by the company, called “GMO coin,” allowing employees to buy Bitcoin.

Based in Tokyo and specializing in web services and many other digital services, GMO started joining the virtual world by opening an exchange in May 2017.

In September, GMO also announced that it will launch a new virtual mining system in the first half of 2018 and promote Bitcoin trading.

Bitcoin has been rising “crazy” since the beginning of the year and is currently trading around $ 16,500 per Bitcoin, up from nearly $ 1,000 on January 1, 2017, according to data from CoinDesk. This currency is becoming more and more popular, people are starting to use it to buy services, pay private school tuition or even buy a home.

However, many financial experts expressed concern about the risk of this virtual currency. World-renowned economist Robert Shiller once said Bitcoin was “a prime example of a bubble.”
